We
individually select each log that would be a good
candidate for a flitch. After the bark has been removed
the log passes through a photoelectric array which scans
and measures the log. With this information the
computers determine the best positioning to remove the
flitch from the log with the seven-foot bandsaw. It is
then cut to length and dried in our elevated
temperature, steam conditioning dry kiln. After being
graded and having defects removed, they are banded and
placed on the truck. After they reach the customer, they
can be re-manufactured into items such as flooring, door
and window parts, and mouldings. With flitches from
Franklin Timber you can count on a high quality product,
expertly processed and dried, made with your
requirements in mind.
Timbers: Our
Prime Face Timbers are cut from logs, individually
selected to yield a square, meeting the customer's exact
requirements. After selection and bark removal the
log is scanned by an array of photo electric eyes.
The measurements taken by these eyes are fed into a
computer, which models the log to determine which timber
would best fit in the log. By
using grading rules and visual grade information
supplied by the sawyer, the computer and carriage can
cut the exact timber specified for the customer's
needs. There are almost no size limitations on
thickness and lengths can reach 26'. The
timbers are then dried to a moisture content of less
than 19%, in a steam conditioning dry kiln at high
temperatures. Not only is the moisture removed
from the timber, but the "pitch is set", a
process that keeps the resin from ever running out of
the timber when in use. The drying process also
kills all insects that may be in the wood, at all stages
of development, preventing them from causing problems
later. These benefits are not attainable in air
dried timbers. Our
timbers are only made from select Southern Yellow Pine
logs. This ensures you the strength and structural
integrity you need and the warmth and beauty you desire.
